I like it, but honestly I think I like "The Full Beard" better.

Men and Beards

  • Apr. 15th, 2009 at 9:04 PM

As the scruff on my face has gotten more and more abundant questions of exactly what I should do to look appealing lead me to a desperate measure... internet research.  I've found myself poking around on "Beard Galleries" a number of different times now.  I am grateful for these resources, and always a bit amused to see the "Cult of Beard" and masculinity played out so on the internet.  I suppose it's amusing to me because I always thought it was just on FTM listerves that masculinity was so discussed and played out.  I guess the numbers of men who obsess over things as facial hair though is larger than I thought.  In a way, this obsession affirms a similarity between transmen and non-transmen.  At the same time, the attention and detail some guys put into their beards is quite astonishing, and a bit disturbing.  (Who in their right mind is obsessive enough to grow every single beard style and photograph it daily?)  I admit i find myself quite drawn into the "BeardGalleries" and "Beard Boards," in part because there are lots of photographs of hot men, and also because I enjoy thinking about how I'll look with different beard styles.  Styles I have successfully done so far are the "Manicured Scruff," variations on the goatee (which I don't think looks good on me), and "The Full Beard."  When my parents come up for my nephew's birthday next weekend I think I'll go with the "Manicured Scruff."  This weekend though, I think I'll turn my "Full Beard" into a "Beard Curtain" or "Chin Strap."  I'll post the results if it turns out well....

I miss my beard!

I don't have any photos to post because of technical problems but I miss my beard!  I shaved it off after I cut my hair short again and now I miss it =(  But it's already growing back =)

Wow.  I just saw this video in my email.  I thought I'd post it here so others could wonder what wingsuit jumping might be like.

Amazing 60 Minutes Piece

This is a great piece from 60 Minutes

Has peace in the Middle East become nothing more than a pipe dream? As Bob Simon reports, a growing number of Israelis and Palestinians feel that a two-state solution is no longer possible.

This is the view this family has outside their front door. A big concrete wall. The family is painting a mural on the back of it which you see part of. Can you imagine living this way?

They are still living in their house but have the Wall surrounding the house on all sides. On 3 sides the wall is an electrified fence. Where the family would look to see the town they are just outside of however the wall is concrete.

Eventually he was allowed to see a medic but that was about 30 minutes later even though a medic was right there.
